The Real Time Transport Protocol (RTP) is an open standard for transmitting data in real time over the Internet (ITU H.225.0).   RTP and RTSP are used widely by DVR manufactures to implement the remote view feature. RTP is the base standard for packeting multimedia data to be used in streaming implementations. That is, the protocol describes how to break up the real time data into packets for transmission.

Streaming video was developed to serve the consumer market for playing videos and music over the Internet. Unfortunately, this means the standards do not specify how to implement playback of video surveillance clips. Thus, even if a manufacturer uses RTP as the underlying format for packeting up the video stream, the product is unlikely to interoperate with other manufactures that also use RTP.
