In selecting a digital video recorder (dvr) the term "field" refers to how television and security cameras work. In a interlaced television monitor, a complete image is painted on the screen in two steps. In the first step every other line is painted on the screen. In the second step, the remaining unpainted lines are painted. Each of these steps contains a "field". On a progressive monitor each frame is a field.
